Lab Report : Generic - see link to rubric on top right hand corner.
Use this format for writing all of your lab reports.
Keep this in your notebook so that you can refer to it BEFORE, DURING, and AFTER writing your report.
TITLE: This should be a descriptive, creative title that describes the experiment.
PURPOSE: The purpose should answer the question,”Why did we do this lab?” It should explain the purpose of the lab and what you hope to learn by doing this experiment.
HYPOTHESIS: This is a statement of what you think the experiment will show. What do you think will be the final outcome of the experiment? This is generally based on prior knowledge, information, or observations. Think through your hypothesis, but realize that not all hypotheses will be correct – that’s why we experiment.
MATERIALS: This is a list of the materials/supplies needed to complete the lab procedure. List the major pieces of equipment first. Then list common supplies.
PROCEDURE: Carefully list in order, each step taken during the lab so that someone could pick up your report and correctly complete the laboratory exercise/experiment. You should also try to identify the variables (independent and dependent) in the experiment.
DATA/RESULTS: This is the section where you show the record of your data you collected. All data you record and observations you make should be neatly presented in a logical, organized fashion in the form of a data table, graph, diagram, and/or text. Label all information completely. This should be able to stand alone from the rest of your report and still be understood.
CONCLUSION: Accept or reject your hypothesis and explain why you accepted or rejected it. Include a summary of the data explaining what your data shows to help your reader to understand your results. This is the body of your report. Connect what we are learning in class with what you learned in the lab. Validity (possible sources of error) should also be included.
LAB REPORTS SHOULD BE NEAT, ORDERLY AND WITHOUT SPELLING AND GRAMMATICAL ERRORS. It is preferred that they are typed, however, if this is a problem, please speak to the teacher
